Abstract: The Nyktostrategoi of Late Antique Egypt were police officials who are found in papyri and inscriptions from the late second century until the early seventh century. At first this paper is concerned with the distribution of the papyrological and epigraphical evidence itself. Furthermore, the office of Nyktostrategia is dealt with and the following questions are elaborated: When and why was it created? How long did the officials serve? Which were their main duties? In how far was the office subject to change and development over time? The final part of the paper focuses on the people who served as Nyktostrategoi: Which personal qualifications led to their appointment and what was their social and economic background?
