Abstract: The dekaprotoi, who were responsible for the collection of Roman taxes, appear in Greek cities from the late first and early second centuries onwards and are attested until the early fourth century. This paper adresses the questions what their primordial task was, whether a development of the office can be traced throughout the centuries, and on which basis dekaprotoi were appointed. In particular the question how, where, and by whom this new office was introduced is essential for the assessment of the behaviour of Roman government towards Greek cities.
