To be published in: R. Haensch (ed), Recht haben und Recht bekommen: Die Gerichtspraxis im Imperium Romanum.
Abstract: This paper deals with petitions to officers in Late Antique Egypt and their implications for jurisdictional issues. It is structured as follows: a short résumé of the situation in Imperial Rome as well as of Late Antique military jurisdiction followed by a description of relevant texts for this study, i.e. petitions to officers in the 4th and 5th cent. CE compared to those stemming from the Imperial Era. All these data will be synthesised to examine the function of petitions to officers within the jurisdictional framework of the Chora.
